Central Basseterre, January 27th 2013 -- Deputy Chairman of the People’s Action Movement Jonel Powell says the late music and cultural legend Tamboura “Jerry Mopstick” Kitwana influenced genrations.
In a short statement posted on his facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/Jonelfor2 the Attorney and possible future Central Basseterre Constituency representative stated, “ Despite not having the privilege of seeing Tamboura Kitwana and the Ellie Matt and the GI’s when they were at the pinnacle of Caribbean music, I have a deep appreciation for the GI’s Brass and the music and contributions of Tamboura Kitwana to our cultural development. I know him best as the host of the daily morning programme Under the Banyan Tree.
He gave us a 2 minute history lesson on a daily basis. He educated a generation on many of the historic facts and personalities of our country. Facts that you will never find in our school’s history programme or text books. Facts that would otherwise not have been known if it wasn’t for Tamboura Kitwana.”
Powell lauded Kitwana’s influence and impact on generations of Kittitians and Nevisians.
Powell said, “Kitwana’s tremendous contribution to music and culture positively impacted and influenced generations and is matched by very few and he will be sadly missed as one of the proud and loved sons of Central Basseterre, McKnight. I would like to wish the family of Tamboura my deep heartfelt condolences. May his soul rest in peace.”
Tamboura Kitwana music history goes back almost 50 years starting with the Joseph Liburd Orchestra and the Silver Rythym Combo. He also had a brief stint with the Grand Ash 2 before joining Ellie Matt and the GI’s Brass as a percussionist and vocalist. He along with Wingrove Hicks , Mick Stokes and Kenrick Williams parted ways with Ellie Matt and formed the GI’s Brass International. Tamboura is the first band member of the legendary Ellie Matt and the GI’s Brass to pass on. This fact will no doubt impact heavily on those members of the legendary band.
