KINGSTON, Jamaica – EIGHTY STREETS in the capital city of Abuja, according to Nigeria's Federal Capital Territory Minister, Aliyu Umar, are to be renamed with the names of persons who have contributed to Nigeria’s democracy.
According to the Jamaica Gleaner online, Umar said during a 48th Independence Anniversary Parade that some roads were “inappropriately named” as they had no relevance or affinity to Nigeria’s “existence, history or culture” and that Garvey and Marley are an integral part of their history and consciousness.
Head of the Chancery at Nigerian High Commission in Kingston, Charles Eyo, said a date has not been set for the name changing but declared that both Garvey and Marley are popular names in his country.

He said that they are highly regarded and are legends, as Garvey fought for the political liberation of blacks and Marley’s lyrics spoke volumes on freedom and love.
Along with the Jamaican icons, American civil rights leaders Martin Luther King J., Malcolm X and Rosa Parks will also have Nigerian streets bearing their names.
Nigerian writers and musicians will also be honoured as well with streets named after them, which also highlights their contributions to Nigeria’s democracy.
The Minister also said that this move comes as an effort to salute Nigeria’s democracy since for more than half of the country’s 48 years of independence it has been ruled by military forces.
