"Housing Revolution tied to Social Transformation”

Charlestown, Nevis: “The housing revolution being undertaken by the Nevis Housing and Lands Development Corporation (NHLDC) is intricately linked to the Social Transformation program of the Nevis Reformation Party led Nevis Island Administration.” says General Manager of the NHLDC, Mr. Eustace Nisbett during a tour of the Cherry Gardens Project in Prospect.  Mr Nisbett explained that the NHLDC was flooded with requests for housing and this project was a direct response to it.

Cherry Gardens is an expansion of Prospect and construction is presently ongoing to build over 100 affordable homes for the people of Nevis.

“The ownership of land is central to the empowerment of an individual and this is the transformation we seek.  Page 20 and 21 of the NRP 2006 Manifesto made specific reference to land ownership and we are merely fulfilling that mandate” said Mr. Nisbett.

“The Honourable Hensley Daniel has been emphasizing the need for finding work for young people in order to steer them in the right direction and as you can see the majority of the people on the Cherry Garden project are young people.

In addition some of the same men who went off to Trinidad for thee months for the training program that Minister Daniel organized are employed right here on the Cherry Garden Project.

So when you look at it, we are aiding social transformation by providing property for the property-less and we are providing jobs for those who were jobless so the benefits to the community are tremendous.” Mr. Nisbett continued.

Mr. Nisbett and the inspectors from the NHLDC have regular site visits on the contractors to ensure quality control and maximum efficiency.

It is expected that most of the houses will be completed in the first quarter of next year and that the people will be able to move in then.  The program is being financed by a loan from the St Kitts Nevis Social Security Board.
