CIC: Bring Motion of No Confidence now!

David Lake

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE St. Kitts-Nevis Chamber of Industry and Commerce (CIC) has joined the chorus in agitating for the Motion of No Confidence in the government to be tabled with immediacy.

The CIC made public a letter, signed by its president David Lake, and presented to the Office of the Prime Minister today (Feb. 1).

The letter recalled that at the organisation’s Christmas Luncheon in December 2012, Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas acknowledged that “pending parliamentary matters, including the Motion of No Confidence could erode investor confidence in our country”.

And in addition to promising to work in avoidance of this effect, Dr. Douglas promised that “the Motion of No Confidence should be heard expeditiously”, the letter informs.

In light thereof, and in light of the volatile position in which the economy of St. Kitts-Nevis has found itself, the CIC issued a clarion call for the Prime Minister “to do all within your power to ensure that the Motion of No Confidence in your Government is brought before the National Assembly without further delay”.

The correspondence indicates that the Chamber’s national and non-national membership has relayed “great concern” that the investment climate in the Federation has already been negatively impacted by the delay of the tabling of the Motion. And additional delay “could cause long lasting damage”.

The Motion of No Confidence was forwarded by Members of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition late last year and was of the view that a matter of this nature should take preference and was to have been brought before the Parliament as a matter of urgency.

With the Motion being filed in early December, last, approximately two months have elapsed and the matter is yet to be heard.
