Bush fire threatened homes in Tabernacle Village

By: Precious Mills,

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – QUICK reaction by firefighters from the Tabernacle Branch of the St. Kitts-Nevis Fire and Rescue Services (SKNFRS) yesterday afternoon (Feb. 3) prevented what could have been a disastrous end to the homes of two residents of Carty's Pasture in Tabernacle Village, St. Kitts.

Information reaching this publication indicated that firefighters had responded to the call of “a big fire in Tabernacle”. On arrival at the scene, they found that the fire was within the bushy area of Carty’s Pasture, which posed a threat to some residents there.

The firefighting professionals immediately assuaged the fear of the residents by quickly extinguishing the flames, which had gathered momentum along a bushy pathway leading to an abandoned building that was close to occupied houses.

One resident told SKNVibes that around 3:00 p.m., while inside her home, she picked up the scent of something being burnt but did not know that it was a bush fire and so close to her residence until a coconut vendor alerted her.”

Asked if the fire was dangerously close to her house, the resident replied: “It was close yes, but not dangerously close because there is an abandoned house next to mine, so the fire was in that yard and in the other yard behind my house.”

Fortunately, and because of the firefighters’ efficiency, the fire did not reach the abandoned house.

As gathered, the fire allegedly started in a nearby ghaut.

Over the past month there have been numerous reports of bush fires in St. Kitts, and only two week ago members of the SKNFRS were called out to extinguish three of them in the Lower Monkey Hill area.
