History & Heritage Hike

Press Release

BASSETERRE ST. Kitts, February 6th, 2013  -- The general public is invited to participate in a very interesting and educational  hike to a secret sugar plantation on the top of Canada Hill this Saturday, 9th February at 7am.

The existence of this estate is not known to the majority of the population of St. Kitts and Nevis, even fewer know of its history and significance. Only the most senior residents of St. Peter (who once lived on the top of Canada Hill when they were youths) know of this hidden sugar estate. Some farmers and old sugar workers still alive may know of it also. Hikers will learn about the history of this little known estate.

A wind mill, a chimney along with machinery from a steam mill, a cistern and other ruins still exist up till today, more than280 years after their construction. Hikers will learn how the sugar cane was crush by the wind mill and also by the steam mill.

The hike is a moderate one and offers magnificent views of what was Great Heeds and Golden Rock Plantations below, the Atlantic coastline, Basseterre, and cloud capped Nevis. Hikers would be wise to walk with their cameras. Parents are encouraged to have their children be a part of this memorable experience. This is a chance to reach back in time and explore and learn about this mysterious and secret sugar plantation.

Hikers shall congregate at the old Treasury Building in Basseterre at 6:30am for a roll call. The hike will start from the ruin at the Lower Canada estate close to the island main road.

The hike is one of the activities for History and Heritage Month 2013. It is organized by the Brimstone Hill Society and the St. Christopher National Trust.
