BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - DESPITE a few hiccups, the Ministry of Public Works continues in its effort to reduce the number of deteriorating roads on St. Kitts with its Road Development Programme.
Over the past few weeks the Project focused on the New Pond Site area as members of the Public Works team were seen excavating old surfaces and replacing them with new ones.
Speaking with SKNVibes, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Public Works and Utilities Lenrick Lake said that the project is just another leg in the Road Development Programme, as the Ministry ventures towards having the deteriorating roads in St. Kitts repaired.
This leg of the project, which was expected to be completed on January 28, was delayed due unforeseen difficulties.
"We had some setbacks...the weather. We had some grading problems and so on, which took some time but we are going to go into paving [the final road] tomorrow and we should be finishing up that area by weekend."
The workmen are currently levelling Lewis Lane after which the Project would be focusing on repairing Nevis and Seaton Streets before moving on to the New Road Housing Development area.
Lake went on to explain that Public Works also did some repairs on the FT Williams Highway with regards to "inching".
He explained that the inching process is one where the workmen increased the density of the road in order to avoid rapid deterioration.
The Road Development Programme began in September 2011 with the resurfacing of West Independence Square Street, followed by a few roads in the Newtown and Greenlands area, as well as some roads in the rural areas.
The Programme then continued with the resurfacing of a few roads in Basseterre before moving once again into the rural areas.
The Programme is an ongoing one with an initiative of fixing all deteriorating roads in St. Kitts and, in about two years' time, at least 90 percent of the roads, if all goes well, would be expected to be in very good condition.
