BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IT may have appeared for only a second, but for nationals of St. Kitts-Nevis and, more so, citizens and residents who are fans of the popular Miami Rapper Meek Mill, seeing the National Flag in one of the artiste’s recent videos is a big deal.
The music video was done for a hot tune called ‘Young and Gettin’ It’ which features fellow rapper Kirko Bangz.
The music video, shot in Miami and directed by the famous DRE Films, was officially released on October, 28, 2012.
The video, which could be seen on Youtube via: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRMq3NpRxe8, currently has over three million views.
The National Flag appears from 1:17 to 1:18 seconds and the song is one out of the 14 tracks from Meek Mill’s debut album called ‘Dreams and Nightmare’.
This morning (Feb. 7), SKNVibes visited the St. Kitts Tourism Authority’s office at the Pelican Mall in downtown Basseterre and spoke with the Marketing Communications and Support Manager, Saju Ng’alla, to find out whether or not the organisation had any knowledge or was affiliated with the National Flag being shown in the video.
He watched the video for the first time during the interview session and informed that the St. Kitts Tourism Authority did not have any involvement with the production of that music video.
He was however pleased to see the National Flag being featured.
“Seeing the St. Kitts-Nevis Flag featured in such a popular music video is indeed a plus that there are people out there in the mainstream music in the United States who are trying to find ways to promote the Federation,” Ng’alla said.
As to how the National Flag got featured in the music video, Ng’alla said it could be a possibility of “many ties”.
And even though the St. Kitts Tourism Authority did not have any involvement, Ng’alla intimated that “clearly the people on the set or management team or owner(s) of the boat have ties to St. Kitts-Nevis and are clearly proud of it by promoting the Federation by use of the national flag”.
Meek Mill is signed to MayBach Music Group (MMG) record label, founded by internationally-recognised US rapper Rick Ross.
Other well-known MMG artistes include Rick Ross himself, French Montana and Omarion.
Interestingly though, Omarion performed at last year’s St. Kitts Music Festival and had emerged onstage with some fancy foot-works performing with the St. Kitts-Nevis Flag.
His performance was one of the top rated acts after he brought an explosive end to the annual extravaganza held on June 28 to 30 at the Warner Park Football Stadium.
He was accompanied by DJ Spark and two male dancers.
To everyone’s pleasant amazement, DJ Spark played ‘Soap Drop’ by the Small Axe Band, which is one of the top bands in St. Kitts-Nevis.
Efforts to contact Meek Mill's management team for a comment were unsuccessful.
