BASSETERRE, St.  Kitts – DUE to inclement weather, the Ministry of Education has decided that the island’s public schools and the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College would be closed at 12 p.m. today (Oct. 17).

SKNVibes has learnt that this decision was made due to the heavy rainfall experiencing in areas from Verchilds to Lodge, although Basseterre has not yet been affected by such weather.

The Hon. Sam Condor, Minister of Education, stated that the decision to close the schools was a precautionary measure, as the rain had been falling heavily in those areas all morning and the forecast promised more of the same for the rest of the day.

“I urge all of the schoolchildren to go home as quickly as they can and to stay off the streets and be safe. I also encourage all drivers, especially those controlling public transportation, to navigate the roads carefully and at a reasonable speed, as the ghauts are running and the hurricane clean-up has not yet finished.”

The heavy rainfall is a possible after-effect of the passage of Hurricane Omar through the Federation, which caused damage to the coastline and several of the nation’s thoroughfares.
