Group in West Basseterre launches campaign to replace Condor

Hon. Sam T. Condor
By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – MEMBERS of the West Basseterre Constituency (St. Christopher Two) have reportedly launched a campaign to replace their present Parliamentary Representative – the Hon. Sam T. Condor – as their St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) candidate for the upcoming General Elections.

Weeks have passed since members of that constituency had voiced their concern over Condor’s representation of them, claiming that they were abandoned, that he had failed to inform them of his position as it relates to the government and his relationship with the Prime Minister, among other things.

And as recently as Tuesday (Feb. 5), a press release was issued by a group of the West Basseterre Branch calling for Condor’s removal; one that outlined the grounds for its call.

In response, a further press release – confirmed by Condor as being an authentic publication of the West Basseterre Branch Executive – was issued, claiming the first to be bogus and did not representative the views of the Executive.

Since then, a third release was disseminated to the media within which it is explained that that group never suggested it was part of or expressed views on behalf of the Branch Executive.

SKNVibes however spoke with the Public Relations Officer of the West Basseterre Branch Group, Terry Williams, who explained its thrust.

“We are in full campaign mode and we are getting ourselves organised in order to replace our past candidate Hon. Sam Condor. And so we need now to look for a new candidate. And in an effort to do that, a group from the West Basseterre Branch is spearheading the organisation of the Branch.

“We are the group spearheading the West Basseterre business, because Mr. Condor has left us and so we are moving to find a candidate and to assure the West Basseterre Constituency that we are still Labour and we are doing nothing illegal, and we are going to be moving forward.”

He said the group has a number of activities planned, including a walk-through of De Village scheduled for Saturday (Feb. 9).

Williams explained that after Condor resigned as a Cabinet Member “our Branch took the initiative to ask him to step aside as the Rep, and so the party took the decision and the Branch to select a person. That person has not yet been selected but we are hoping pretty soon to have that person”.

The PRO thanked Condor for his years of service and representation of the people of Constituency Number Two and wished him well in his future endeavours.

Asked how many persons comprise the group, Williams said he preferred not to give a figure but informed that the support for its movement has been more than encouraging.

He said the group is a “very large” one.
