Remarks By Deputy Premier And Minister For Natural Resources Delivered By Permanent Secretary Ronald Smith-Berkeley - Farmers' Week On Virgin Gorda

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, February 8th, 2013  -- Farmers’ Week is a time when we come together to celebrate every aspect of agriculture. The agricultural industry in the BVI is not without its challenges; however, farming is critically important and every effort will be made to keep it alive and ensure that it develops into an economically viable industry once again.

With frightening statistics coming from Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations about the number of people in the world that suffer from malnutrition due to the lack of food, suggests to us that food security is very important. This means that we as a Territory have to do all in our power to ensure that our efforts regarding food production bears much fruit, as it were.

The farmers that are represented here serve as a testimony to the fact, that despite the many challenges, this industry has potential. All across the BVI and certainly here on Virgin Gorda, there are farmers who work hard every day of the year tending their farm and animals and providing to the general population an end product that is second to none.

It is an undisputed reality that locally grown produce and livestock tend to be better in many ways than those imported.  The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Department of Agriculture congratulate those farmers who have persevered, in an industry that can be very labour intensive, and are now relatively successful entrepreneurs.

The Ministry and the Department hope that others will see these successful farmers as examples of the gains that can be had and to begin themselves to move in that direction. The Ministry and the Department would also like to encourage those successful farmers to take under their wings, as it were, interested young people and teach them how to turn their dreams into reality.
