BASSETERE, St. Kitts – PRIME MINISTER of St. Kitts and Nevis, the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas today (Feb. 12) extended condolences to the family and friends of the late Pamela Ann Tyson.

Tyson, who was a well-known netballer and Past President of the St. Kitts and Caribbean Netball Associations, passed away in Trinidad on Monday (Feb. 11).

Speaking on his weekly radio programme, ‘Ask the Prime Minister’, Dr. Douglas, in addition to extending condolences to the bereaved family members, noted that Tyson was an athlete extraordinaire.

“Many of us learnt with some sadness that Ms. Pamela Ann Tyson has passed away in Trinidad. I want to use this programme to extend condolences and extend condolences of my Cabinet and my government and the people of St. Kitts and Nevis to all those who are now left to mourn the loss and departure of Ms. Tyson .

“I make reference because Pam Tyson was a very extraordinary athlete and manager. Many of you would remember her leading the St. Kitts National Netball Team to our Regional Championship back in 1973 and again in 1978. And it was in that general time period she became the first President of the Caribbean Netball Association.

“But on a much more personal and governmental role, Ms. Tyson served briefly as my Personal Assistant when I first became Prime Minister in 1995.”

Tyson athletic career started in 1955 and ended in 1979, during which period she had made the girls of St. Kitts and Nevis a force to be reckoned with in the Caribbean.

As one individual said during the time when Netball City was renamed in her honour, “Whenever one speaks about netball, the name Pamela Tyson has to be first and foremost. She is the foundation upon which our star players were made, because of her strong leadership qualities and the discipline she instilled in them.”

Tyson was a founding member of the St. Kitts Netball Association, formerly known as the St. Kitts Netball League. She worked her way through the posts of Treasurer, Vice President and President between 1966 and 1986.

Her accomplishments made her a citizen of the sporting world as she became Manager and Head of the Delegation to the World Tournament. She was also the First Vice President of the West Indies Netball Board of Control.
Tyson was the recipient of a number of awards and certificate, which include the 4H Lady of the Year, Certificate of Appreciation from the Paul South Committee of East Basseterre, Caribbean Netball Association Award, Sports Stalwart Certificate Independence Honours Award in Recognition of her Contribution to Netball, the Sion’s Award for Dedicated Service to the  Region, Business and Professional Women’s Club Award, and the Warner Park Committee 75th  Anniversary Award for Dedicated Service to Netball.

The management and staff of SKNVibes join with the Prime Minister, his Cabinet and the nation in extending sincerest condolences to the family members, friends and associates of the late Pamela Ann Tyson.
