BASSETERRE, St, Kitts - THE Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas, has dismissed claims that last week’s arrest of sprint icon Kim Collins was politically motivated.
Speaking yesterday (Feb. 13) on his weekly radio programme ‘Ask the Prime Minster’, Dr. Douglas said that the claims are just political deviousness.
“I must note with regret that political opportunism seem to have hit a new low in recent days. You would remember, listeners, last week on this programme I made a special point of extending special congratulations to Mr. Kim Collins for yet another win in Russia. Since then, there has been certain development pertaining to his personal life.”
He went on to profess the claim as being outrageous.
“Incredibly however, those who have been working hardest to create an atmosphere of tension nationally, are now breathlessly charging to anyone who would listen that this most personal and unfortunate matter in Mr. Collins’ life was actually a politically motivated attack by the government. This is extremely outrageous!
“We must simply note these political acrobatics and we must move on.”
Earlier this week, the wife of the sprint icon, Paula Collins, lashed out at the police on how they handled Collins.
“The police seem to be one-sided, the Court system seem to be a mess, because he keeps going to a Court that has not given him any rights.
“Imagine, the same people that had him in Court went in his car to pull his own child out of his car. And when Kim went to Court with them, the police lied in Court, the baby mother lied in Court, the husband lied in Court and Kim was still found guilty. A system like that I just don’t understand.”
Paula expressed that while St. Kitts may have many people who truly care for Kim, there are others who do not have good intentions for him, and it is their voices being heard and their actions seen.
Collins was arrested in Nevis last Thursday at the Vance Amory International Airport for allegedly not making adequate arrangement to support his children while overseas.
Another media house reported him as saying that he did not owe any child support and had receipts to show he was not in arrears, as well as documents to prove that he had put measures in place for payments to be made.
SKNVibes understands that the Court had ordered that amendments be made to one of the documents which was done and that Kim was allowed to travel after sureties were again identified to make the required payments if he failed to do so.
