CHARLESTOWN, Nevis - The Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. the Hon. Denzil Douglas, on Saturday recommended that houses in Low Street be upgraded to avoid any devastation by hurricanes in the future.

The Prime Minister, who was at the time speaking to reporters at Unellers Restaurant after touring Omar hit areas in Nevis, said forward planning would make the area secure in the event of hurricanes.

Nevis’ Premier, the Hon. Joseph Parry, who was also at the press briefing, said giving Low Street houses a major face-lift would be a priority for the Nevis Island Administration (NIA).  He also told reporters that future upgrading of Low Street is an opportunity for restoring the residential area.

The PM arrived aboard the Sea Bridge and was met by Premier Parry. He was accompanied by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security Astona Browne, National Disaster Coordinator Carl Herbert and Nevis Disaster Management Director Lester Blackett.

Shortly after his arrival, Parry personally drove Dr. Douglas in his jeep to the Oualie Beach Hotel, where buckles were already at work as a work force repaired the pier that was damaged by Hurricane Omar.

The PM and his entourage then drove to the Four Seasons Resort where hotel management and employees are working around the clock to put back the resort into shape. Dr. Douglas was hopeful that repair works would be completed soon so that the employees could get back to work.

The entourage also visited Shevy’s and Sunshine’s; the former was flattened by the impact caused by Hurricane Omar, but on the PM’s visit workers were seen cleaning up the area to commence rebuilding of the restaurant.

The Geothermal Site 3 drilling location in Hamilton was also visited before the PM culminated his tour at the heavily-struck Low Street.

Dr. Douglas said he was impressed with the progress of the geothermal exploration and noted that when the geothermal energy is available the Federation might be able to share it with other Caribbean islands.

Both leaders agreed that geothermal energy would enable the Federation to diversify its economy.

Meanwhile, the PM remained on Nevis to attend the funeral of Shirlene Evelyn Stanley, wife of prominent businessman Edric Stanley, who died at the Alexandra Hospital on Wednesday, October 8.
