(This article was written over a year ago but it is being published now because of its acute relevance.)
IF YOU ARE NOT walking towards UNITY you are on the wrong side of the road and on the wrong side of history. Walking towards Unity is the same as walking towards a stress-free life, towards Nirvana, Heaven, Zen or whatever you may call the harmonious place you wish to reach for or find.
Walking towards Unity must be practiced in our homes, our schools, our workplaces, our corporations, our associations, our institutions, in our churches and in our politics. There is no more fulfilling practice than walking towards Unity.
Many will say, “I will unite, but it is the others who will not accept it.” Or “Nothing can be achieved until the other side is willing to lay down arms.” Or “My pride will not permit me to talk with them. It is a matter of principle.”
All of these are stumbling blocks to Unity. We all know that one hand can’t clap.
People like Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela understood the power and strength of Unity and were able to use tools of Non-violence and Forgiveness only because they understood the overarching Oneness of the human spirit and the need to do whatever it takes to keep on the right side of the road that leads to UNITY.
It takes patience and an egoless or humble character to achieve Unity. These men knew that within Unity one could find the solution to all life’s problems. They knew that the whole was far greater than the sum of its parts and in the same way that it is necessary to bring together all the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle to see the whole picture, so it is that more and more solutions will be found when the thoughts of man are brought together in UNITY.
The Congress of the United States of America with the present attitudes of its opposing parties provides a good example of division causing a drag on the solution of problems.
With Unity, formerly opposing parties become more than the sum of their parts and the achievement of common goals will be accelerated. With DISUNITY comes hate, and with hate comes confusion, division and then destruction.
Unfortunately in our young Nation, Democracy, with its two-party system, has not been for us a path for honing our skills of thinking and debating, or eliciting the best way to govern. Instead it has become the pathway of hate, victimization and destruction. It is destroying our country.
Being a strong leader in our society means being able to annihilate enemies, having the power to destroy those who oppose us, and being able to crush all those who do not march to our drumbeat. That is how we define a strong leader of government, a political party or a strong leader of a gang.
That mindset has permeated our society in much the same way as the mindset of ‘beating a child’ in our education system is considered the best way of making it learn.
In the culture of antagonism we have created, problems will remain unsolved because there will be non- acceptance of joint solutions.
Look at the culture of antagonism that has been created between the Jews and the Palestinians from Bible times until now. Hitherto, nations had justified distancing themselves from Palestinians because the latter had been refusing to recognize Israel as a state.
Now the Palestinians are asking that they be recognized as a state by the United Nations. The resolution was prepared for a vote.
The very nations that denounced the Palestinians for not recognizing Israel are hesitating to recognize Palestine and failing to bring them into the family of Nations.
Walking towards Unity takes a spirit that is patient, non-violent, forgiving and lacking in false pride or ego. A leader with such qualities will take us along the path of UNITY. Up to now we have been walking on the wrong side of the road.
Walking towards UNITY could indeed be walking towards LOVE.
