(L-R) Permanent secretary in Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, Lloyd Lazar, Amanda Greene, and Novelette Morton, Human Resource and Projects Manager in the Tourism Authority
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AMANDA GREENE of the Washington Archibald High School was today (Oct. 21) granted the title Junior Minister of Tourism after proving to be the best public speaker at the Annual Youth Congress organized by the St. Kitts Tourism Authority.

The public speaking competition, held at the Basseterre High School Auditorium, highlighted Tourism Awareness Month and engaged the participants in a discussion of the effects of climate change on tourism in the country.

Greene came up against Davon Richardson of Sandy Point High, Lisette Hutchinson of St. Theresa’s Convent and Donalene Roberts of Basseterre High. She won the prepared speech segment and was recognized as the most appropriate individual to represent the Federation at the 2009 Caribbean Tourism Conference (CTC). Greene is to succeed the former Junior Minister, Jermaine James, upon his return from this year’s hosting of the CTC.

The judges highlighted the noteworthy performance of Richardson, commenting that he won the Impromptu segment by “skillfully mastering the segment with his articulation and sense of spontaneous thinking”.

Novelette Morton, Human Resource and Projects Manager in the Tourism Authority, told SKNVibes that the competition was one of the highlights specifically directed toward the youth.

“We want youth involvement and youth awareness in relation to the importance of tourism. It also presents them with an

opportunity to present their own ideas, to be creative, and to do research.

The response has been good over the years. However, we would really like to get to the point where all high schools compete in the event.

With respect to this year’s competition, it was of a very high standard and I want to further encourage the students to engage in activities such as these to build their confidence, to increase their knowledge and generally to become more aware of tourism to the economy.”

Greene expressed her pleasure in winning the competition she views “as a tangible reward for my practise and hard work”.

“It’s not just about winning, it’s an honour to represent my school and it’s also about having fun. I’m surprised at how much fun I’ve had and I definitely would want to do it again.

“I want to let youth know that tourism is a very important industry to our Federation and we need to get the word around to all of our citizens, therefore we shouldn’t hesitate on discussing such an important issue.”
