Passengers rushed to hospital after buses collide in New Road

By: Precious Mills, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - PASSENGERS who were on their way to work early this morning (Feb. 19) had to make an unscheduled trip to the hospital to get medical attention for injuries sustained after two passenger buses collided on the road leading to the St. Peter’s area .

Sergeant Calvin Amory of the Traffic Department informed SKNVibes that the accident took place at about 7:15 a.m. at a junction in New Road in the vicinity of the CONTEC Bus Stop aback the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport.

He revealed that the accident had involved HA21, driven by Gregory ‘Greg’ Skerritt of Newtown, and HA50, owned by Andrew ‘Talbo’ Bass and was driven by Alphonso ‘Mem’ Caines of Lower Monkey Hill and New Road respectively.

“Passengers in both vehicles sustained injuries, and my understanding is that the injuries were not life-threatening,” Amory said.

Asked about the makeup of passengers on the buses, Amory said the occupants were adults on their way to work and investigations revealed that no school child was aboard any of the two vehicles.

The passengers were transported to the Joseph N. France General Hospital by the Emergency Medical Services and private vehicles.

He was however unable to say how many passengers were taken to the hospital at the time of the interview.

Reportedly, both vehicles were travelling in the same direction...from St Peter’s to Basseterre.

According to SGT Amory, HA21 had stopped to pick up someone and HA50, which was travelling behind, collided with the rear of it.

He said both vehicles were “badly damaged”, specifically the back of HA21 and at the front of the other bus.

The accident had interrupted the morning’s traffic flow which was consequently directed by two police officers.

Amory appealed to motorists to be careful on the road at all times, which he noted would help in preventing the occurrences of accidents so as to safeguards lives and property.

“My advice to motorists using the road in general is to pay full attention when driving. It is very important. If you are travelling behind other vehicles, it is important to leave enough space to manoeuvre should you have to make any sudden stops or have an emergency manoeuvre to be made. You should be concentrating at all times.”

He further encouraged drivers to “please” adhere to the speed limits, which are 20 miles per hour in the built-up areas and 40 miles per hour in the non-built up areas.
