Students educated on the Importance of fire prevention

~~Adz:Right~~ Roadtown, Tortola - Over 1,000 students in the Territory are now better educated on the importance of fire prevention following their participation in a series of lectures that were held as part of Fire Safety Awareness Week, which was observed in the Territory from October 5-12.

The lectures were done at a number of pre-primary, primary and secondary schools in the Territory, not only as a means to heighten awareness but to educate the  students on what to do in the event of a fire, the importance of conducting fire drills and being prepared..

Mr. William Penn, Acting Deputy Chief Fire Officer at the Fire and Rescue Service Department, said time was taken to reiterate the importance of fire drills to the students. “A number of fire drills were done at selected schools to give the students the opportunity to participate in an actual fire drill,” Mr. Penn added.

Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Communications and Works       Mr. John Penn commended the officers for staging the drills and educating the students on the importance of conducting regular fire drills.

“Drills are essential to the safety of persons as they train our minds and our responses thereby improving our chances of surviving a disaster.  This is because a properly drilled mind is a trained mind that is prepared to instinctively and correctly respond usually resulting in either the reduction of the potential damages or in saving lives,” Mr. Samuel said.

The mission of the Fire and Rescue Service Department is to save and protect lives and to minimise damage to property by preventing and extinguishing fires.
