NHLDC Public Relations

The Nevis Housing and Land Development Corporation (NHLDC) answered the call of some of the fisher folk of Jessups on Friday 17th October 2008 who called on the corporation to help them get their boats back in the water.

General Manager for the NHLDC, Mr. Eustace Nisbett Jr. explained that after they got the call, they immediately responded to help the fishermen.  He went on “While the NHLDC exists as a corporation, we are not solely here to make a profit.

The NHLDC understands and appreciates the fact that we like all businesses also have a social responsibility and we see our work here today in helping the fishermen get their boats back in the water as an extension of that duty.

Hurricane or no hurricane these fishermen need to make money and we the people of Nevis always want to eat fish so we were glad to help.”

Mr Halstead Tyson one of the affected fishermen spoke on behalf of the fishermen. “I have over 100 pots in the water and I need my boats back in the water.  I am so happy that the Housing and Land responded so quickly.  The hurricane threw one of my boats way into the bushes and I couldn’t get it out.

Another old boat somehow landed on one of my boats and I couldn’t get it off.  I want to on behalf of all the fishermen here thank the NRP government and the Land Corporation for working with us.  It is always good to know you have a government looking out for you” Mr. Tyson explained.

The NHLDC was also involved in the Disaster Management effort as one of the important agencies in the whole disaster management plan.

On Thursday backhoes from the NHLDC were in operation trying to clear the road from the debris and mud that the sea had deposited on the road.

The backhoes worked for hours so that business could return to normal the following Friday.  The NHLDC Mr. Nisbett explained will continue to use its resources for the betterment of the people of Nevis especially after any disaster.
