Basseterre, Wednesday 20th February, 2013, (PAM Communications Unit) – The results of the elections in the sister Caribbean state of Grenada, have been viewed as a warning for those Prime Ministers, including the one in St. Kitts and Nevis, who feel that they can ignore and stifle the will and desire of the people.
Political Leader of the People’s Action Movement, PAM, in St. Kitts, Mr. Shawn Richards, says that the 15-0 victory for the New National Party, NNP, of incoming Prime Minister, Dr. Keith Mitchell, must be a warning sign to the members and leaders of the St. Kitts and Nevis Labour Party Government, which for almost three months has been dodging the debate and vote on a pending Motion of No Confidence that was filed since early December, 2012.
However, Richards is of the view that just as the former Grenada Prime Minister, Mr. Tillman Thomas, ran from meetings of the parliament there, refusing to allow a similar motion that was brought against his government, the same election consequences will be faced by Prime Minister Douglas and the Labour Government, whenever the elections take place here shortly.
The Member of Parliament and leader of the largest opposition party in St. Kitts and Nevis, Mr. Richards, said that it is obvious that in Grenada, on Tuesday 19th February, 2013, the electorate there spoke very loudly with their votes, placing Dr. Mitchell back in charge of the affairs of that country.
“What is noteworthy about it is that before the election in Grenada, a similar situation existed there, to what is currently happening in St. Kitts and Nevis. The Prime Minister in that country sought to thwart the process by proroguing the parliament, rather than having a Vote of No Confidence Motion being debated,” said Richards.
The popular Kittitian politician added that what it has definitely shown, is that, apart from the people’s representatives asking for the Vote of No Confidence, the general population decided to add their voice by sending a message to Tillman Thomas that they had no confidence in his party and his government, to continue to run the affairs of Grenada, and as such they voted accordingly.
Richards cautioned that the current and outgoing Prime Minister here in St. Kitts and Nevis should take special note of the fall of the Grenada Government after Tuesday’s election. He added that though Douglas is finding all excuses and using all types of tactics to run from the Vote of No Confidence, the time is soon coming when, just as in Grenada, when you run from the people’s representatives in parliament, you still have to face the power of the people at large. And that day is fast approaching for the Labour Government, promised the PAM Leader. Douglas’ fate will be the same, said Richards.
Though he extended best wishes and congratulations to the new Grenada Prime Minister, Dr. Mitchell, the PAM Leader offered some words of advice to the new leader, who heads the NNP of Grenada.
Richards said Dr. Mitchell has received a very strong mandate, 15-0, “therefore I hope that they would take this in good stride and not see it as total destruction of the opposition. And because of their strong mandate they ought not to feel that they are only there to represent the people who would have voted for them, while forgetting those citizens who supported the other party.
“I would encourage them as much as possible, to ensure that they are there to serve all of the people of Grenada, and to use the trust and confidence reposed in them, for all Grenadians.”
On Tuesday, the New National Party swept to power, ousting the incumbent National Democratic Congress, (NDC), winning all 15 seats. Not even the outgoing Prime Minister Tillman Thomas, was able to hold on to his seat; losing to a totally new comer to politics.
Previously the NDC held 11 of the 15 seats in parliament, while Dr. Mitchell’s party held only 4.
