BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, February 19th, 2013 -- Federal Minister of Sports, the Hon Glenn Phillip, has hailed the continued collaborative efforts between the Department of Sports and the Carib Breweries St. Kitts and Nevis Limited in promoting the game of cricket in the Federation.
“Seventeen successive years of high school cricket competition is a proud record of the consistent commitment of the organisation to youth and sport development,” said Hon Phillip on Saturday February 16 at the Warner Park Cricket Stadium as he launched the 17th edition of the Giant Malt High Schools and College Cricket Competition,
Minister Phillip observed that time continues to demand for structural programmes to be put in place, which will mould the lives of the country’s young people and to provide them with avenues to which they can channel their boundless energies.
“This public/private sector partnership must be commended for its dependable delivery of such a tournament,” he said. “I want to personally commend the management of Carib Breweries St. Kitts Nevis Limited, manufacturers of Giant Malt for its generous contribution to sports. The Ministry and the Department of Sports are always pleased to partner with you and we commend highly your passion to sponsorship and promotion of sports in this country.”
Present at the function which was chaired by Sports Officer in the Ministry of Sports, Mr Vernon Springer, included Mr Steve Laplace who was representing Carib Brewery St. Kitts-Nevis, Mr Jamir Claxton, Nevis Senior Sports Coordinator who represented the Minister of Sports in Nevis, the Hon Hazel Brandy-Williams, Mr Auckland Hector, President of the St. Kitts Cricket Association, and Mr Keith Scarborough, President of the Nevis Cricket Association.
Making remarks at the launch, President of the St. Kitts Cricket Association, Mr Auckland Hector, said that his association would focus on the development of cricket, the youth and particularly the players engaged in the competition, saying it was his view that it is from the youth that the country’s cricket will be redeveloped.
“I am heartened to note that I am not alone in recognising the need for us to focus on the development of the youth cricketers within the Federation,” noted Mr Hector. He observed that on Friday (February 15) he visited the Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis to accept a sponsorship cheque on behalf of the St. Kitts Cricket Association when a senior officer within the bank made a similar suggestion for the association to focus on the youth.
President of the Nevis Cricket Association, Mr Keith Scarborough, called on players to show discipline during the course of the tournament. He implored on the players to aim at lifting the ‘Most Disciplined School/College’ award.
“If you are not disciplined, if you do not have the right attitude, it doesn’t matter how much talent you have, you would not make it,” advised Mr Scarborough. “So, start now to develop the right attitude, to develop good discipline and to have serious love for the game, because if you do not have the love for the game, you are not going to reach very far.”
