BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - FOUR men from Santo Domingo who currently reside in St. Kitts are on trial at the Basseterre High Court for allegedly attempting to steal a quantity of items valued at some EC$500 000.

The men are Angel Palmer, Ramon Benitezsaba, Juan Frederico Samiento of Durant Avenue, McKnight and Arismandi Rivera of Thompson Street, McKnight.

Their trial began yesterday (Feb. 20) with counsel Garth Wilkin leading the prosecution team while each accused has legal representation of their own.

The prosecution would be trying to prove that on December 14, 2011, the four accused attempted to steal a large quantity of copper wire, scrap metals, old transformers and batteries valued at $EC.5M from Romeo Sylvester Tweed.

To assist their case, the prosecution would be calling two witnesses, Tweed and a police officer, who, Wilkin, in his opening statement to the jury, said appeared on the said date at the location in Conaree where Tweed's property was kept.

The case continues today with the first witness, Tweed testifying on behalf of the prosecution.
