Antigua receives hurricane aid from China

~~Adz:Left~~ST.JOHNS, Antigua – Members of the People’s Republic of China diplomatic corps has offered food supplies along with household items in an effort to assist the nation in recovering after the passage of Hurricane Omar.

According to the Antigua Sun, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Peoples’ Republic of China, Chen Ligang made the presentation at the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS).

Ligang explained that he was prompted to offer aid after being informed of the many residents who had taken shelter at the multi-purpose cultural centre.

“Antigua and Barbuda was spared the full fury but a tropical storm nonetheless has left scores homeless. We have provided some of the projects in the past, like the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Ground, but it is also important to offer humanitarian aid to people,” Ligang said.

Canned foods, juices, toiletries and bottled water were among the items handed over to Director of NODS, Philmore Mullin and Minister of Housing and Social Transformation, Hilson Baptiste during the ceremony.

NODS also reportedly received donations of water from GCS Bottling, Antigua Home and Office Depot, Red Cross and St. Vincent de Paul charity organisation.
