BASSETERRE St. Kitts, February 21st, 2013 -- The attention of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Services has been drawn to the open and detailed media discussion of the child maintenance issues surrounding national sports hero, Mr. Kim Collins.
The Ministry is concerned that the ventilation of intimate and sensitive family matters may have negative effects on innocent children. In the circumstances, children often become victims of heckling and bullying which can and do cause severe emotional distress.
An African proverb applies: When elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers.
Therefore, the Ministry, acting in accordance with its mandate to protect and advance the health and well-being of all children and families, is moved to issue the following advisory:
1: Child Maintenance matters are private, family matters with innocent children at the center.
2: Children can and do suffer deep and prolonged emotional consequences when parents separate. In fact, children can and do blame themselves for such separation.
3: Self-blame is often complicated by intense thoughts and feelings of rejection and worthlessness which may extend to depression and self-harm.
The Ministry, while acknowledging the entitlement to free speech, is appealing for good judgment, fairness and restraint, having regard, first and foremost, for the welfare of the children.
