BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - DENNIS JEFFERS of Mc Knight was granted leniency yesterday afternoon (Feb. 21) and set free, having been found guilty of building breaking with intent; an offence he committed at Buckley’s Village on April 23, 2012.
He was convicted of breaking into Carib Breweries with intent to steal.
The 27-year-old appeared before His Lordship Justice Errol Thomas at the Basseterre High Court yesterday for sentencing after he was found guilty by a 12-member jury on January 16.
When asked if he had anything to say before receiving judgment, Jeffers apologised for his crime and asked for mercy.
“My time in prison has shown me that one mistake could also be a man’s last. I would like the Court to have leniency on me when passing judgment.”
According to Jeffers’ Social Inquiry Report which was read by Justice Thomas, the young man was a troubled individual whose childhood was not a pleasant one.
It stated that his parents disregarded him but he managed to overcome the abandonment.
Justice Thomas did not speak at length about the crime but stated that it was clear Jeffers did not act alone.
He however told Jeffers that the Court would be merciful towards him and he then imposed a one-year suspended sentence.
This sentence comes on the condition that he does not commit another offence which carries a penalty in excess of six months for one year.
Jeffers was warned that if he does break the law before the suspension is over, he would be picked up by police officers, taken back to the High Court and the suspended sentence would be reversed and his original one year imprisonment would be imposed.
Jeffers was released from prison today (Feb. 22).
