Carty throws Condor’s example of PAM back in his face

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – SPEAKING on Freedom FM’s ‘Issues’ programme on Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 18), Senator Nigel Carty recalled an analogy used by Sam Condor in which he pointed to the deceitful nature of the People’s Action Movement (PAM).

Carty claimed that the former Deputy Prime Minister Party had used one of Aesop’s Fables, “The Scorpion and the Frog” to describe the nature of the PAM.

However, prior to the accusation, host of ‘Issues’ Juni Liburd had questioned Carty on whether or not there is a move by the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party to have Condor out of the Party along with plans to boot former Senior Government Minister Dr. Timothy Harris as the Party’s Chairman.

“I think that it came quite clear particularly when the Honourable Sam Condor collaborated with the Honourable Shawn Richards to put a motion in the Court against the Labour Party Administration that he was clearly on a track towards working with the People’s Action Movement.

“So there is no doubt in the minds of people who have been looking at the situation, hoping that it wasn’t really the intention of its members to work with the People’s Action Movement. All these doubts have now clearly been moved and I think that people in these two constituencies and throughout the length and breadth of the country understand that a vote for the Honourable Sam Condor…a vote for the Honourable Timothy Harris are in fact votes for the People’s Action Movement, against who these two gentlemen have campaigned in the past against so vigorously.”

He also accused both Condor and Timothy of being associated closely with the PAM, which he claimed was a bombshell for the Labour Party’s supporters.

Carty went on to talk about a story he claimed to have been told by Condor who made a comparison between the PAM and “The Scorpion and the Frog”, which highlighted unchanging dishonest and cunning traits of the PAM.

The Senator told Liburd that he found it rather shocking that Condor has teamed up with a member of the Opposition Party.

“In fact, I remember very well a story told by Sam Condor where he was telling a story about the frog and the scorpion. He said that the scorpion was intriguing and encouraging the frog to have him taken across the river. The frog wanted to get across, the scorpion was offering his help. The frog pleaded with the scorpion that, ‘I don’t believe I can accept your invitation as a scorpion because I know your nature…your nature is to sting, to bite, to kill and although you have been encouraging me and inviting me, I am very much in doubt as to whether I should accept.’”

In recalling the turn of events in that fable, Carty said, “Eventually, the scorpion prevailed upon the frog and so the frog hopped onto the scorpion’s back and away they went across the river. As they were nearing the shore on the other side of the river, the frog was taken aback completely when the scorpion turned around and stung the frog and killed him.

“This is a story I was told by the Honourable Sam Condor and he was making reference to the People’s Action Movement. He said this is their very nature. ‘What we know of them is their nature…they cannot change…they will not change’. And so it’s most surprising to see how the Honourable Sam Condor and, in fact, the Honourable Timothy Harris can now get into bed with the People’s Action Movement. I think this has really taken Labour Party supporters by surprise in a big way.”

Condor had resigned from the Cabinet of the Federal Government on Thursday (Jan. 31) for reasons which he claimed in a press release were because of issues pertaining to good governance and constitutional integrity.

On the following day, he and the Leader of the PAM, Shawn Richards, filed papers for an injunction on the appointment of Attorney-General Jason Hamilton as a Senator challenging his ability to vote in Parliament for the Senators (Increasing of Number) 2012 Bill, which was passed into law on Tuesday, January 2013.
