BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IN its effort to sensitise athletics enthusiasts on the schools and their athletes who they should look for in the upcoming TDC Inter-School Championships, SKNVibes has chosen to highlight Basseterre High School (BHS) as the second institution in a series of articles.
The first was defending champs Washington Archibald High School.
Today, we shall look at the school that is popularly known as the ‘Birthplace of Champions’ in track and field.
Over the years, BHS has produced many top athletes in St. Kitts and Nevis, and among them is the 2003 100M World Champion, sprint icon Kim Collins.
In an interview with this publication, coach of the school Isaiah Morris said it was quite difficult to point out any new prospects for this year as they have not done any real scouting for athletes, but he however outlined that they have hope in two of them.
“I think that if we go by from what we had last year, I think that the two persons that we basically have a lot of hope in is Karissa Eddy who is an intermediate athlete. She will be probably doing the 100, 200 and 400 metres. And then we have Alkronous Bridgewater who was a CARIFTA athlete last year and he will be looking again this year to qualify for CARIFTA. We will be looking for him to do something for us in the 100 and 200 meters.”
He then highlighted his prospects in the middle and long distances.
“In the middle distance we have some pretty good prospects as well. We have Shenla Mitcham. She got close to qualifying for CARIFTA last year as well, and based on what she has done in the development meets thus far, she should be pushed to the limits and do something for us as well.
“In the long distances category, we may fear well but we still would have to go out there and seek some new athletes coming in from the primary schools. In first form, so far, there was one named Shaquan Abbot. I think he is a good prospect. We will be having a mini-sports day called Battle Storm 2013 here on Friday and I believe we are going to see a number of persons coming through from there as well, but we still have to wait and see what we have.”
Morris also weighed in on his team’s chances of winning the TDC Inter-School Competition.
“My philosophy is that you never go into anything to lose, and so we here at Basseterre High still believe that even though it does not appear we are going to win, we are still going to go out there and put our best foot forward and therefore we are trying to mobilise persons and get them into a squad and into training.
“And yes, we are going in with a mentality to win and even and if we don’t win we will be gracious in defeat. None of the schools could ever count out Basseterre High School because we going out with the intention to win.”
