BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - AS the high schools on St. Kitts and Nevis gear up for an athletic battle amongst each other, SKNVibes decided to highlight the top athletes whom individuals can look forward to seeing emerging from the Charles E. Mills Secondary School (CEMSS) - formerly Sandy Point High School.
The much-anticipated TDC Inter-School 2013 Championships is slated to be held at the Silver Jubilee Stadium from March 22 to 24. And it is touted that former champions, Charles E. Mills Secondary and the Basseterre High School (BHS), as well as the Verchild’s High School (VHS), would be looking to upstage defending champions, the Washington Archibald High School (WAHS – Washy Wildcats).
The CEMSS, since the inception of the competition, has established itself as the most successful team, running away with the bragging rights more times than any other school, capturing its last victory in 2010.
The school's coach, Maxime Isaiah, pointed out to SKNVibes five of the institution's athletes who sports enthusiasts should monitor.
He named two of them as Krystal Liburd and Nathanial Huggins, both of whom strength lies in the field events. Huggins was part of the St. Kitts and Nevis team that travelled to the CARIFTA games in Bermuda in 2012.
Isaiah disclosed that in the middle distances, Rhodana Wilkins and Rhianda Richards are the athletes to look forward to in the upcoming championships.
While in the sprints category he named Dimitri Browne as the only prospect.
When asked how confident he is of his school gaining victory at the championships, the coach responded, “I am 99 percent confident that the school can win the championship. In sports, anything can happen! You might go in as the favourite and things do happen.”
Last year, the CEMSS placed third with 14 gold medals and won EC$2 000. The Washy Wildcats retained the Inter-School Championships title, capturing 23 gold medals in the process and an EC$5 000 cash prize.
In second place was VHS with 17 gold medals and an EC$3 000 cash prize.
BHS placed fourth with 11 gold medals and EC$1 000, while Charlestown Secondary School was fifth with nine gold medals and EC$750. And Cayon High School placed sixth with six gold medals and EC$500.
The monetary prize was sponsored by the St. Kitts-Nevis Amateur Athletics Association.
