Believe it or not, but never had it occurred to me how energetic the crime in St. Kitts really is. I always heard stories from others about what happened during their altercation with a robber, but never did it phase me, until it happened to me.
Walking through the streets of Basseterre on Saturday 23rd February, 2013, I was robbed under a lit lamppost. People passing, cars driving by, my robber forced is handgun in my side and requested all my belongings. (Cash and jewelry)
I was traumatized, but commonly during trauma, it forces one to think about a vast number of things.
In my thoughts, I tried to unmask his identity, as he was only wearing a hat, but kept his head down at all times. I thought about ‘why me, an unemployed passerby’, but my heaviest thought was about the fact that he robbed me under a lit lamppost.
That simple fact signified the level of ignorance and how brave one actually is.
Again with a gun in my side, cars on the pitched road, people walking by, while I was standing under a lit lamppost being robbed.
It gets to me when people take every situation and make it political, but permit me to take this chance.
Just for a second ask yourselves, as I did that night, is our federation so taken up by politics, unity governments, fires, resignation letters and town hall meetings that everything else is placed on the backburner?
What are the politicians really doing?
Neglecting their portfolios, and plotting schemes against the Prime Minister, the Government or the Opposition.
Busy finalizing the details and characteristics of this unity party we hear so much about; and busy back talking other politicians.
This predictable behavior has been going on for too long, and is being taken advantage of by the criminal minds preying on our people.
Must St. Kitts go on any further being labeled and discriminated because of these people?
Should we, as Kittitians and residents really fear to walk our own streets?
And why should we be the ones who don’t trust or believe in our police men? Our police men who are the same ones, smoking and drinking, lying and stealing, and innocently beating up people and neglecting calls for help.
We don’t deserve this.
Evidently, nowadays everyone wants to be a politician; not doing what they’re supposed to be doing, but focusing on who said what, what kind of government is best for us and who should be Prime Minister.
There is a time and place for everything; this should not be on our minds night and day, 24/7.
Quit blaming one man and blame yourselves. Our country is in need of dire help, and if we continue to sit around arguing about one thing all day, how are we concerned about what’s happening down the street to an innocent bystander, or in the bushes to a little girl.
Now I am not blaming these happenings on the Government or any politician, but if their focus was on the people of St. Kitts rather than their personal gains, then I guarantee things would be much better.
Everywhere you turn it’s all about one Politian calling out another and responses to the call out, but what about what’s happening, their plans in their constituencies, or just helping out their constituents?
We all need help and no one is safe.
If St. Kitts continue down this path, then definitely we will find ourselves in a rut; so deep down, far from being rescued. If this is the case then we don’t need a government, we don’t need politicians and their politrics. We can do without the lies and dodge being abandoned by them.
Our actions, ‘We’ as a people should look out for ourselves and our brothers and sisters. Create our own safe haven, protect our sons and daughters and stop relying on our government.
We have become so complacent that we leave everything up to our elected leaders, when we can actually tackle some of these problems ourselves by coming together joining our Hands, Heads and Hearts against criminal acts and violent behaviors.
It’s our country, not theirs.
So let’s act like it and take a stand, fight for what we deserve and fight for what should be.
As Ghandi said “be the change you want to see in the world.”
