Rotary celebrates 108th Birthday on 23rd February

    BASSETERRE St. Kitts, February 25th, 2013   --  Rotary, a global network of community volunteers, is one of the largest and most influential international humanitarian service organizations worldwide.  Founded in Chicago on February 23, 1905  today over 1.2 million members belong to 33,000 Rotary Clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas.

     

    The Rotary Clubs throughout the world will be celebrating Rotary Day in different ways. Here in the BVI the Rotary Club of Road Town will be hosting a Health Exposition at the Noel Lloyd Park on Saturday 23rd February  7:00am – 2:00pm and the General public is invited to come  for various health screenings among other things.  Additionally, the Family of  Rotary Clubs will have a  joint assembly, On Friday 22nd February during which time Rotary’s Birthday will be recognized.

     

    Rotary members, as volunteers conduct projects to address today’s humanitarian challenges including, Illiteracy, disease, hunger, poverty, lack of clean water, and environmental concerns while encouraging high standards in all vocations.  In addition to the humanitarian services provided in their communities and throughout the world , Rotarians  strive to build goodwill and peace. This year’s Rotary theme “Service Through Peace” is a clear indication of the prominence that world peace has in Rotary. 

     

    Here in the BVI the Family of Rotary has donated much needed equipment to  Peebles Hospital, provided scholarships, sponsored schools, sponsor and support youth programs such as KATS and YEP, among many other things. BVI Rotary Clubs join others around the world to celebrate Rotary’s Birthday known as Rotary’s World Understanding and Peace Day.

     

    Rotary’s top philanthropic goal is the worldwide eradication of the crippling and life threatening disease  -Polio. To date, Rotary has contributed nearly US$1billion and countless volunteer hours to the protection of more than 2 billion children in 122 countries.  In addition Rotary has played a major role in decisions by donor governments to contribute over $4billion to this effort.

     

    13th – 18th May 2013 The BVI family of Rotary will host the annual conference for District 7020.  Upwards of 500 Rotarians and guests from ten countries will come together to learn, fellowship and chart the course within the District for the next several years.
