Transformation of TVET Discussed During Policy Review

Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 25th, 2013 (SKNIS): The Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Council recently interacted with three representatives from UNESCO during a two-week workshop which discussed the transformation of TVET in St. Kitts and Nevis. 
 
The change will aid the development of both work and life skills of TVET participants said UNESCO Programme Specialist for TVET, Keith Holmes.
 
 “So we spent sometime this morning looking at what does transforming TVET mean in St. Kitts and Nevis, how to rethink and reposition TEVET and how to actually have a more integrated approach towards policy development in this area,” he stated.
 
He added that this integrated approach will facilitate more dialogue between relevant stakeholders, public and private sectors and local communities.  
 
“So that TVET and skills development can be seen as integral to the education and training system as a whole which will contribute and [improve] the overall development of the Federation,” he explained.
 
Mr. Holmes expressed that this will be beneficial to those individuals who may be seeking a job and also satisfy the needs of employers who are trying to find suitable skilled workers.
 
In a subsequent interview Principal TVET Officer Fitzroy Wilkin explained that this inclusive focus can be dubbed as “TVET for all”. He explained that there will be a component in the National TVET policy that speaks to how to deal with persons with disabilities, how to ensure gender equity in training, how to ensure that there is a proper progression from one programme to the other and how to manage TVET at all levels of education and training in St. Kitts and Nevis.
 
The inclusive policy will be in line with the overall vision of sustainable development which takes into account the environmental, cultural, political and economic aspects for long term sustainability.
