BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ONE of the individuals involved in the traffic accident that occurred earlier today (Feb. 26), has succumbed to his injuries at the Joseph N. France General Hospital.
The deceased is Osaro Ikponmwosa, a student of the Windsor School of Medicine who was residing at Ocean Gardens.
The unfortunate incident – according to a release issued by the Traffic Department – occurred at about 8:40 this morning along the Island’s Main Road in vicinity of the Conaree Landfill.
Two vehicles were involved in the accident; a motor pickup truck, PA5968, driven by Leroy Pemberton of St. Peters and owned by the Parks and Beaches Unit, and a motorcar, P6558, which was owned and driven by Ikponmwosa.
“Investigation revealed that the pick-up was travelling from Cayon to Basseterre along the Island Main Road and when the driver reach in the vicinity of the Land Fill at Conaree, he saw the car approaching in the opposite direction, the car lost control and collided to the pick-up on the eastern side of the road,” the traffic communique explained.
All occupants of both vehicles, which the Traffic Department numbered as seven, were transported to the Joseph N. France General Hospital and treated for injuries sustained.
Ikpomnwosa however succumbed to his injuries after being transported to the medical institution. And his death registers the second road fatality to have taken place within the Federation for the year.
The first was that of Lesford ‘Wifey’ Ryan, a resident of Sandy Point. That incident occurred on February 9, 2013.
Ryan was reportedly performing a test-run on a motorcycle when he lost control, which caused him to run into a drain on the western side of the road before colliding with an electrical pole.
He was pronounced dead at the Joseph N. France General Hospital.
The Traffic Department has indicated that an autopsy would be performed on Ikpomnwosa’s remains and they continue to make investigations into the incident.
