    February 27th, 2013   --  The University of the West Indies Open Campus St. Kitts and Nevis launched the new course Exploring Kittitian History on Thursday 21st February, 2013. The launch was a collaborative event organised by the UWI Open Campus St. Kitts & Nevis, The National Archives and the History and Heritage Committee.

     

    Chair of the proceedings Mr. Larry Armony, Co-ordinator of the History and Heritage Month of Activities 2013 expressed his support for the course as especially relevant to teachers and students preparing to for CAPE level examinations. Head of the UWI Open Campus St. Kitts & Nevis Site, Mrs. Susan Owen gave welcome remarks that spoke to the benefit that the course would bring to those involved in education and tourism. She further identified the tremendous benefits of the course to personal growth and development and encouraged all the attendees to sign up.

     

    The programme of events centred on presentations from the course facilitators Mrs. Victoria Borg O’Flaherty, Ms. Hazel Brookes and Dr. Daphne Hobson. Mrs. O’Flaherty, the Director of the National Archives gave a brief overview of the course and also spoke to the nature of archival material and the importance of correctly selecting and storing the information.

     

    In her presentation Ms. Brookes who has had much training and experience working in museums imparted information about the difference between genealogy and family history. Dr. Hobson, an architect by profession, gave a brief comparison of construction techniques and materials used by the Amerindian inhabitants of the island and the methods used by the European settlers.  She demonstrated through a number of slides how the European settlers incorporated these into their buildings, some of which are still standing in Nevis today.

     

    The audience was treated to cultural performances by Jackiema Flemming, a ROOCOO FutureStar Entertainer and Christian Nathaniel, the reigning Junior Calypso King for carnival 2012 – 2013.Their calypsos were well received by the audience. Jackiema or Lady Charisma the name by which she known in the calypso world, sang ‘Nowhere But Here’ which is a patriotic song which expresses her love for St. Kitts despite the challenges that the nation may face. Christian known as De Conqueror Chri$ sang ‘Break De Silence’ which speaks to the issue of child abuse. With this song he captured the Junior Calypso Crown.

     

    The event concluded with closing remarks made by Mrs. Cicely Jacobs, Programme Office at the UWI Open Campus St. Kitts and Nevis. She gave important information related to the start date, cost of the course and registration procedures. The two young persons who performed at the event were offered scholarships covering full tuition fees for the course by the UWI Open Campus St. Kitts and Nevis Head.

     

    Additionally a member of the audience offered a full sponsorship to a deserving individual. The UWI Open Campus would like to thank the persons who attended the event to make it the success. The Exploring Kittitian History 10 week course will begin on Wednesday 20th March, 2013.
