ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, February 27th, 2013   -   Leading up to Education Week 2013 and with a focus on developing critical thinking and research skills, the Ministry of Education and Culture will host a series of debates among the Territory’s secondary schools.

The first debate will be held between the Cedar International School and the Claudia Creque Educational Centre this Thursday, February 28 on the topic, “The Legalisation of Marijuana will result in the socio-economic decline of the Virgin Islands.”  Cedar will be the proposition team while Claudia Creque will be the opposition.

This debate is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall.

On Saturday, March 2 at 6 p.m. a second debate will be held at that same venue between the Bregado Flax Educational Centre Secondary Division and the St. George’s Secondary School on the topic, “Female victims of underage teenage pregnancy, regardless of age, must be allowed to return to school.”

Later that same night, a third debate will take place between the Elmore Stoutt High School and the B.V.I. Seventh-day Adventist School on the topic, “Junk Food should be banned in all Primary and Secondary Schools.”

The semi-finals will be held on March 6 while the finals will be held during Education Week on March 13.

Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn announced last year that the Department of Education will resume debates as a step towards fostering academic competitions among the Territory’s public and private secondary schools.

The Education Minister stated that science fairs, debates, spelling and general knowledge competitions and even business fairs allow students who are academically inclined to have opportunities to flex their brain muscles.

The Secondary schools debates are one of several activities being planned in observance of Education Week 2013 to be held in the Territory from March 10 to 16 under the theme, “Creating a Culture of Excellence Through Prevention and Intervention.”
