CASTRIES, St. Lucia, Febuary 27th 2013 — The Jason Roberts Foundation has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Saint Lucia-based Sacred Sports Foundation Inc, in a move that will see the pair partnering up on a number of sports development initiatives.

The MOU is a significant step forward for both organisations and also opens up a variety of opportunities for collaboration together on sports programmes in the Caribbean.

The Jason Roberts Foundation based in the UK and Grenada was launched in May 2007 in the UK and in June 2007 in Grenada. The registered charity is the brainchild of professional footballer Jason Roberts to provide opportunities for children and young people to participate in sports and cultural activities in the UK and in the Caribbean.

Jason Roberts MBE, hails from a very athletic family, his uncles include former footballers Cyrille Regis, David Regis and Otis Roberts (a former Grenadian international who played in Hong Kong and Belgium). He is also related to Olympic gold medallist John Regis.

Sacred Sports Foundation was founded in 2008 by ex-Saint Lucia international player, former Peterborough, Lincoln City and Macclesfield Town Manager Keith Alexander and family members.

“This is an important step forward in helping develop sports programmes around the region,” according to Otis Roberts, Jason’s uncle and JRF chief executive officer. “We will work together on a number of initiatives designed to pool our combined strengths to help the youth of the UK and Caribbean.”

Sacred Sports Foundation Chairman Delroy Alexander said the organisation was excited about the possibilities for the partnership.

“The Jason Roberts Foundation has been a leader in sports development programmes and working with the Diaspora in the UK to help develop Caribbean youth,” he said. “This is a natural alliance for us and comes in a year when we will be making several gains, including the launch of Sport in Black & White our first annual international sports conference and youth forum taking place in Saint Lucia June 10th-23rd .

Sport in Black & White has been designated the 3rd Sport and the Global South International Conference and will bring together leaders in the fields of sport and youth development to tackle and debate a range of pressing issues for the first time in the Caribbean. Conference partners include The Ministry of Youth Development and Sport,  and The Center for the Study of Sport and Leisure in Society at the Academy of International Sport, George Mason University.

The partnership agreement will see increased collaboration between the two in sharing networks, funding resources and strengthen both organizations capabilities to continue to deliver high quality sports development projects in the Eastern Caribbean and the rest of the region.

“Our youth require major interventions to tackle serious and troubling issues, such as unemployment rates above 40 per cent and social challenges that are equal to those in other less developed regions of the world, added Alexander.
