    Tourism Authority beautifies local beach

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Cockleshell Beach received a much-needed facelift when the St. Kitts Tourism Authority (SKTA) spearheaded a campaign to have it cleaned up early yesterday morning.

SKTA’s Product Supervisor Vincent Branch stated that Cockleshell Beach was chosen because the organisers felt it was important to promote beach cleanliness. Last year’s clean-up was held at the ferry terminal and throughout Central Basseterre.

There were only five volunteers, and according to Branch, although he was cognisant that the clean-up was scheduled on a working day, he had “expected more support from the taxi operators who had pledged their manpower. But those of us who were present were still able to get the job done and we weren’t satisfied until the beach was practically spotless”.

“The purpose of this project is to improve the environment so that everyone can enjoy the natural beauty of our island. Beach-goers need to stop littering and dumping their garbage, because having trash around can cause people to feel bad or become negative. This is they type of behaviour we need to adopt if we want to make our country healthier,” Branch said.

The clean-up began at 6:15 a.m. and ended after 11 a.m. with participants having collected over 20 60-gallon bags of garbage.
