Young Gassano Barry of the Maude Crosse Preparatory School received a lovely round of applause from the appreciative audience for his lusty rendition of the national anthem.

Mr. Elvin Bailey Assistant Director for Research Statistics and Public Relations delivered welcome remarks in which he outlined the main objective of the quiz was to ensure that the primary students gain a basic understanding of the workings of Social Security.

He warmly welcomed all who were present and assured everyone that they were in for an educational morning.

Mrs. Ellen Grant, Education Officer gave remarks on behalf of the Education Department.  She lauded the partnership Social Security has established with the Education Department and the primary schools and stated that history was been made here this morning in Nevis with this being the inaugural Social Security Quiz.

Mr. Eric Evelyn the moderator than gave a comprehensive overview of the quiz rules and format.

He indicated that there was going to be three rounds of competition and that each round would consist of four questions per school.  The last round which would be the most difficult would allow the team members to consult then the team’s captain will give the answer.

The Quiz got on the way shortly after and the correct answers were greeted with loud cheers from the supporters from the various schools.

At the end of round three St.Thomas’s Primary represented by Cheslin Maloney and Yvado Simmonds emerged the winner with a perfect score of 120 points.

However, there was a tie for second place between Ivor Walters Primary, Maude Crosse Preparatory and St.John’s Primary who all amassed 110 points. This brought on the sudden death tie breaker round that initiated a lot of interest. When the dust settled Ivor Walters placed second, Maude Crosse Preparatory third and St.Johns Primary fourth.

At the conclusion of the exciting quiz there was an equally impressive Awards Ceremony.  All participants were presented a certificate of participation and a one GB memory stick.  These presentations were done by Chesley “Pharoah” Davis, Oscar “King Astro” Browne, Jim Simmons and Andrea Tyson, parents of some of the participants. The schools are to be presented with cash prizes.

The grand prize which is a Visual Screen Projector valued at EC $4000.00 would be presented to the St.Thomas’s Primary school shortly. We at Social Security believe in education through technology; and we can see great gains not only in academics but other social activities such as a movie night.  ~~Adz:Right~~

Walter Morton delivered the vote of thanks after which the children and parents were refreshed by some tasty snacks provided by Detomeldon’s Bakery.

The Social Security takes this opportunity to thank the Education Department, the students, teachers and parents for their involvement and participation as we continue on our quest to educate one on all on the benefits of Social Security.
