BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE man who was shot and killed this morning (Fe. 3) shortly before 8:00 a.m. name was given as Daren ‘Boonty’ Duporte of Godwin Ghaut Estate.
This publication learnt that the 24-year-old man succumbed to an upper body gunshot wound near his home while running to escape his attacker(s).
It is understood that he dropped dead near the family home owned by his mother, Debbie Duporte, which was partially destroyed by fire back in July 2009, which had left seven of them homeless at the time.
The house is situated near a grassy pathway upon which vehicles and pedestrians regularly traverse.
Officers from the Crime Scene Unit were observed carrying out their investigations in the general area where he was shot, including along the pathway.
One of the deceased’s younger sister informed SKNVibes that after hearing one gunshot fired at “minutes to 8:00”, she looked through the kitchen window and saw her brother was running.
“He right foot buckle down and he fall on he back,” she shared.
She further stated that her brother did not sleep home last night.
She explained that he slept at one of his male friends “up de lane” who she described to be a “close friend of the family”.
Reportedly, the deceased “sometimes” used to sleep over at the friend’s house.
She said her brother was “nice” although he had his obstinate ways.
Duporte’s body was identified by an older sister, Jillian Rogers, at about 10:10 a.m., who after seeing his face briefly held his hand in a bereaved gesture.
Undertakers from Jenkins Funeral Home, who had arrived on the scene about a 20 to 30 minutes before the identification process, took away the body under police escort.
Rogers said her brother was not one to interfere with people.
As understood from her, the deceased was very helpful to their mother, especially in instances when she would have request of him to do something for her, even if he acted unwillingly to do so when asked.
“I don’t understand why this happened,” the distraught sister remarked.
According to a release from the Police Press and Public Relations Officer, Inspector Lyndon David, “On Sunday 3 March 2013 Police are investigating the death of 24 year old Darren Du Porte of Half Way Tree. Initial investigation revealed that a single gunshot was heard in the area and a search discovered the body of Du Porte.”
The PRO declared that the police could not confirm if the deceased was the intended victim, but investigations are ongoing.
