ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, March 4th, 2013   --  As the Government continues to create activities to boost the tourism product and preserve the cultural heritage of the Virgin Islands; Minister for Communications and Works, Honourable Mark Vanterpool, in doing his part, visited the old Her Majesty’s Prison on Main Street, the proposed site for the Territory’s next museum.

Minister Vanterpool told the Department of Information and Public Relations, “The old prison holds a lot of historical significance that Government want to utilise. It once housed the Immigration Department, Passport Office, Police Station and the Fire Services. It was also the place where hangings for capital crimes were carried out.”

He added, “There is a lot of history there and to restore the area and turn it into a museum will yield many benefits, as well as serve as a historical point of pride for the people of the Territory.”

Members of the naval support ship RFA Wave Knight will begin clean-up efforts next week and assist with renovations.

The Government of the Virgin Islands is committed to improving aesthetics, connectivity to historical Road Town and increasing the tourism product.
