Nevisian Youth Reaps Benefits From A Ganar training

Logon to vibesnevis.com... Nevis News

CHARLESTOWN Nevis, March 5th, 2013   --  19 year old Donel Whyte, a resident of Nevis, is much more appreciative of the training she received as a participant of the  A Ganar program, a USAID funded initiative that provides technical and employability skills training to youth aged 16 – 24.

As a student at the Charlestown Secondary School, while in fourth form, Donel knew that the end of her formal secondary education was inevitable. It was around this time that she became involved in the A Ganar program. She recalls her deep desire at that time to find a  lucrative job to assist her mother and siblings.

In the initial stages of the program, Donel was slightly disappointed that the programme did not include more field trips. Nonetheless, she persevered and completed the programme because it afforded her a unique opportunity to acquire skills that would help her to function effectively in the world of work. As a result of her involvement in A Ganar, she was able to learn how to dress appropriately for work, how to conduct herself in an interview and develop her communication skills.

She thoroughly enjoyed the Phase 1 employability skills training. Her favourite core skill is respect because she views it as an important attribute for life. Respect helps us to better communicate while on the job and minimises conflicts.

She did job training at Delisle Walwyn during Phases 2 and 3 doing clerical duties. She described her experience at the office as wonderful noting that she was able to effectively perform the duties assigned to her. During a field trip to the hydroponic farm in 2012, she was very vocal about her desire to work.  The employer was quite intrigued by her spirit and openness and offered her part-time employment. Later that year, based on Donel’s willingness to learn and work, she was offered full time employment status.

“A Ganar program was a good programme because I eventually ended up with a full time job and it can happen to any of us.”

She expressed thanks to the A Ganar program for the support and helping her to get a full time job.
