Mother suspected of killing her baby

~~Adz:Right~~ ST. CROIX, USVI- No criminal charges have been brought against a 22-year-old mother suspected of stabbing her infant son to death last Thursday (Oct. 23) but the woman has instead been remanded to the psychiatric ward of Luis Hospital.

On that Thursday, officers in the area of William’s Delight had responded to a 1 p.m. disturbance call at the unnamed mother’s home only to find her in the front yard, frantic and covered in blood.

Police then discovered the woman’s 16-month-old son lying in a pool of blood inside the dwelling. Responding medical technicians pronounced the child dead shortly thereafter.

At the scene of the crime the Police collected a pair of scissors, which they believe to be the murder weapon, along with other evidence.

The mother was reportedly living with her parents at the time of the child’s death, however she and the baby were home alone when he was murdered.

Human Services Commissioner Chris Finch informed the media Friday (Oct. 25) that the woman had visited his staff mere weeks earlier after being referred for mental health services, but her visit did not raise any suspicions of violent feelings toward herself or her child.

Finch provided no specifics as to what kind of services the woman had sought at Human Services.
Over the weekend Police spokeswoman Melody Rames said that the woman was “not in police custody at this time but is receiving treatment at Luis Hospital for illnesses of a mental nature”. The woman was also treated for a minor laceration.

Police investigations into the crime are ongoing at this time, though Rames gave no indication as to what if any charges would be filed against the woman.
