BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – WITH a score of 183 points, Blue House emerged the winner in the annual Miss Beverly Harris Spelling Bee Competition held Tuesday afternoon (Mar. 5) at the Deane-Glasford Primary School in John England Village, St. Peter’s .
In second position was Red House with 148 points, third was Green House which amassed 139 points while Gold House placed fourth with 123 points.
The competition was held in four different age categories - Under Seven, Under Nine, Under 11 and Under 13.
In the Seen Round, and with 30 seconds on the clock, contestants were given words for which they had to practice in advance. However, in the Unseen Rounds, the ‘spelling bees’ were given words they were expected to know at their respective grade levels.
Five points were allotted for each correctly spelt word in the Seen Round and six points in the Unseen.
Winner of the Under Seven category was Leron Walters of Blue House while second place went to N’Kwani Pemberton of Green House.
Some of the words they had to spell in this category were Bat, Rat, Are, Boy, Girl and This.
Princess Simon of Gold House was declared in the Under Nine category and Red House competitor Rhoyanna Warner placed second.
There were no competitors for Green House in this category.
Some of the words in this category were Children, Adjective, Important and Cocoon.
For the Under 11 category, Yelena Elliott of Red House won the judges’ nod and Aydden Tuckett (Blue House) and Bijorn Dasent (Green House) tied for second place.
The seen words included Exclamatory, Exterior, Auditory and Capacity while some of the unseen words were Alphabet, Delicious and Discipline.
In the Under 13 category Anusuyah Bhoojraj of Blue House was declared the winner and Green House member K’Ziieño Crossley followed closely behind.
Receipt, Ambiguous, Cliché and Excruciate were some of the words asked to spell.
For the Under 11 and 13 categories, the participants were given definitions of the words and for sentence structure by the moderator, respectively.

Under Seven - Juniah Benjamin (Blue House), Lejani Isaac, C-Quani Carey (Gold House), Demani Martin (Green House) and Janieva France and Lennicia Williams (Red House).
Under Nine - Rouniesha Nisbett (Gold House), Nelly Sanchier (Red House), Joshua Benjamin and Tionne Maynard (Blue House).
Under 11 - Jendari Mills and Leyah Huggins (Gold House), Aydden Tuckett and Jahwin Gilbert (Blue House), Davicia Collins and Bjorn Dascent (Green House).
Under 13: Calesha Amory and Christine Browne (Gold House), Melania Rouse (Blue House), Jostania Wattley (Green House) and Alisa Joseph (Red House).
The judges of the competition were teachers Shelana Barzey who was the head judge, Darscelle Smith and Amoy Nisbett.
The points gained by each House from the Spelling Bee were added to those scored at the Athletics Heats, which will be merged with the points each House gains at the schools’ Sports Day scheduled to take place at the St. Peter’s Playfield, starting at 1:30 p.m. on Friday (Mar.8).
Blue House was adjudged the overall winner with 418 points, followed by Gold House with 425, Green House with 426 and Red House in the cellar with 395 points.
