‘I Love Reggae’ to celebrate Black History, Reggae artistes and Love

Bob Marley and Dennis Brown

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THIS evening (Mar. 7), all roads lead to Ma Pau for the joint Island Xpressions (IX) and Jamaican/Kittitian (JamKit) Association’s hosting of an event to celebrate Black History Month, the birth anniversary of two Reggae icons and the spreading of Love.

According to Samal Duggins, the event is entitled ‘I Love Reggae’ and this is the third time IX has collaborated with JamKit to celebrate “the month of February holistically”.

“The evening is called ‘I love Reggae’ and it represents a lot more than what meets the eye. We recognise that February had three elements to it that were powerful…Heritage/History, Love in terms of Valentine’s Day and the birthdays of musical icons Bob Marley and Dennis Brown,” he said.

Duggins said the night would not just feature Reggae music, but also Lovers Rock, Poetry and a few surprises.

For the first time since its inception, the event will feature the top notch music of the Limitless Band which, as its name suggests, has no limit when it comes to music.

Management has promised that all those who intend to attend the event would be mesmerised by the band’s wide range of music and its talented singers.

There are going to be performances from artistes such as Sankofa Lion, Horsie of 4Play, Ashkenaz, ITYC, Poets, DC & Mz. Kitten, Simburgers, Jah Fire and more.

Duggins said they are still in the process of finalising more performances.

“Looking at what we have, we are guaranteeing a wonderful night. The vibes, which is what I generally like about Island Xpressions, the atmosphere, the discussions, the creative connectivity, you can listen to someone speak about the kind of day you had without even telling them.

“And as Caribbean music has become phenomenal through these two artistes, any development of Caribbean arts must be attributed to them. We’re an organisation that supports arts, not just poetry, but music as well. Last month we did a whole show on Charlie and his music, so we support music, art and dance,” Duggins said.

He also said that there is a list of other persons they would like to celebrate in similar fashion to Marley and Brown, “because at the end of the day they represent us. This is what we’re about”.

He also commended JamKit for organising the event every year in recognition of the Reggae artistes.

So, if you are a fan of Bob Marley and love songs like ‘One Love’ and ‘Redemption Song’ and Dennis Brown’s ‘Money in my Pocket’ and ‘Love has found its Way’, then ‘I Love Reggae’ is the event for you to attend to celebrate and remember.

The event begins at 8:30 p.m.
