St.Kitts-Nevis Leader of the Opposition People’s Action Movement, Hon Shawn K. Richards, issues statement on death of President Hugo Chavez

Honourable Shawn K. Richards
By: Honourable Shawn K. Richards, Press Release

March 7th 2013 - The passing of President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, on Tuesday 5th March, 2013, will leave a void in the politics of Latin America & the Caribbean.

It was therefore with much regret and sorrow that the People’s Action Movement, (PAM), learnt of the death of this distinguished regional leader who championed the cause of our small developing nations, including those in the Caribbean.

At 58 and 14 years in office, President Chavez built so many social, political and economic bridges in our region, and we here in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis continue to benefit from his Administration’s tangible support.

Perhaps the most publicly known bridge is that of Petro Caribe which has greatly aided the efforts of states such as ours, in responding to the challenges we face in providing more affordable energy options.

The People’s Action Movement is certain that as a champion of Caribbean working class people, the late President will be sorely missed.

I did not have the opportunity to meet President Chavez but having observed his methods, read of his achievements and listened to some of his speeches, I recognize that he was a man of great intellect, vision and conviction of purpose.

His stout resistance to imperialism and colonialism has not escaped our attention.  Perhaps all of us, who live in a region that was plundered by imperialists from many parts of the world, would have a greater appreciation for such efforts that demanded respect, not only for our sovereignty, but also our heritage and rich traditions.

There may be conflicting views about his leadership, but no one can deny that he used his country's vast resources in oil to launch social programs that include state-run food markets, new public housing, free health clinics, and programs in education that helped in the reduction of poverty in Venezuela, during his presidency.

Further, as a result of his leadership, Citgo Petroleum Corporation, a subsidiary of Venezuela’s state-owned oil company, continues to provide heating oil to poor Americans, free of charge.

On behalf of the People’s Action Movement and on my own behalf, I extend condolences to his immediate family and to the Government and people of Venezuela, on the loss of their hero and President, Hugo Chavez.
