The WICB/Scotia Bank Sponsored Kiddy Cricket Primary Schools Preliminary Round Zonal Matches

Press Release

The WICB/Scotia Bank Sponsored Kiddy Cricket Primary Schools Preliminary Round Zonal Festival Matches, got on its way Monday 18th February in St.Kitts, at the St. Pauls Cricket Stadium, with a brief opening ceremony, where Mr. Junie Mitcham, Leeward Islands Territorial Development Officer addressing the participants, along with Mr. Jeffery Hazel Acting Director of Sports and Mr. Charles Morton representative from Scotia Bank who declared the Festival Opened.

The WICB/Scotia Bank sponsored Kiddy Cricket Program was initiated in St.Kitts in 2009 with four Primary Schools participating in the program, and as part of the program goals and objectives, which is to increase schools participation.  Mitcham say’s it gives him great pleasure to stateall seventeen Government Primary Schools are now participating in the program at the start of the school year in January 2013.

This I must say was possible through a total collaborative effort with the ministry of education and the principals that truly embrace the program and gave their commitment to their school participation in the program.

Mitcham say’s in his endeavour to have the WICB/ Scotia Bank Kiddy Cricket Program implemented in all primary schools on the Island his next objective is to get the Private Primary Schools involved in the program, hopefully within the next school term.

The WICB/Scotia Bank Kiddy Cricket Primary Schools Festival seeks to give the participants and opportunity to compete amongst their peers in a competitive and fun environment, build exposure, cultivate sportsmanship and to display cricketing skills developed through the programme.  Iwish to state I am most pleased with the high level interest and enthusiasm the participants have displayed throughout the preliminary round Zonal matches, especially amongst the females.

Although there is still some work to be done in further developing the basic fundamental skills, which is a work in progress, the coaches must be commended for the work they have done thus far, to enable the participant’sto be at a competitive standard after over a month of teaching with the added thirteen schools.

The question has been asked from several principals, what the transition for the participantsafter WICB/Scotia Bank Kiddy Cricket.  Mitcham said he have informed the principals thatthe transition for the participants is to move into the WICB Grass Roots Cricket Program, which is they next stage of development by expanding on the fundamentals learn during the Scotia Bank Kiddy Cricket Program.

Mitcham said he further informed the principalsthat the transition into the WICB Grass Roots Cricket Program will be made easier for the participants this year with the initiation of a summer coaching clinic, where the top forty participants coming out of the WICB/ Scotia Bank Kiddy Cricket Program will engage in advance training at which they will cover some of the most integral areas of their further development.

These areas are: Batting, Bowling, Fielding, Wicket keeping, History and Knowledge of the game and Personal life style development.

Mitcham wish to take this opportunity to express profoundthanksand gratitude to Scotia Bank for its invaluable support and contribution towards the development and advancement of West Cricket.

Mitcham also wish to thank the ministry of education, the principals and teachers for their support and corporation in helping to bring the festival to fruition for the very first time since the initiation of the program in St. Kitts 2009.
