Red House blow away rivals at Washie Sports Day

By: Loshaun Dixon, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ATHLETES of Red House collectively displayed unmatched athletic prowess to blow away their rivals to be adjudged Champions of this year’s Washington Archibald High School Sports Day.

With hundreds of patrons in attendance at the Taylors Village Playfield on Sunday (Mar. 10), top athletes of the two-time defending Inter-School Champions gave sport enthusiasts a glimpse of what they can expect at the TDC Inter-School Championships.

In the closing stages of the day’s event, Red House had maintained its earlier lead, and though a comeback had seemed to be in the making for Orange House after consecutive wins in a number of relays, Red House stood fast.

The event saw a host of top performances from many athletes.

Dominating the sprints in the junior girls’ category was Namibia Clavier of Red House, who had distanced herself from the other participants in both the individual events and the relays.

CARIFTA 2012 athlete Kajon Paris displayed his experience in pacing himself during his domination of the middle and distance races. He won both the 800 and 1 500 metre races in the senior boys’ category.

Dominance in the girls’ intermediate category was also shown by Hannah Mills who won all the sprint races in which she participated, and Sadine Connor who conquered all and sundry in the sprint events of the senior category.

Top performances also came from Anwar Springer who triumphed in a variety of events in the boys’ intermediate category.

The day however belonged to Kishonna Brooks who triumphed not only in the sprint events, but also in the 800 metres in girls’ intermediate category.

Brooks’ ability to run well under pressure was demonstrated in the 4X100 metres relay when her Blue House team mates had lagged in the rear. After receiving the baton, she performed a seemingly impossible feat by quickly running past two of her rivals at approximately 10 metres shy of the tape and narrowly edged out the third competitor to give her house gold.

There was also a battle for supremacy in the senior boys’ 200 and 100 metre races between O’Neal Thomas and Josiah Oyebefun. Thomas first got out of the blocks in the 200m event and maintained that position to first breast the tape, but it was sweet revenge for Oyebefun in the 100 metre event who crossed the finish line some 10 metres ahead of his rival.

The 200 and 400 metre races had to be timed-final events; in that the athletes with the fastest time were declared winners because the track could have only accommodated four lanes around the two bends.

With such performances, many pundits have tipped the athletes of Washington Archibald High School to regain the TDC Inter-School Championships which they have dominated over the past two years.

Coach Donell Esdaille had previously declared to SKNVibes his confidence of the school being successful once again at the Championships.

“Once we plan and prepare properly, I think that we will be able to become champions. It all depends on our preparation and the readiness of our athletes. Once they are ready, we feel we can compete with anybody in the country.”
