BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - AS the high schools on St. Kitts and Nevis prepare for the 2013 TDC Inter-School Championships, SKNVibes has decided to highlight the top athletes whom persons can look forward to emerging from Cayon High School.

The Championships will be held at the Silver Jubilee Stadium from March 22 to 24 and it is expected that the participating schools would be looking to upstage defending champions Washington Archibald High School (WAHS).

This media house spoke with Cayon High School’s Coach Basil Williams who stated that the education institution has a very young crop of athletes.

“We have some young athletes coming up. In long jump we have Wayne Matthew and in long jump again you have Kivaun Isaac.

“You would have athletes seen like Craig Connor who won the sprints, but he is alright in the long jumps. We have some junior girls like Carissa Browne and Jovanna Morton who competed in the high jump. Morton was the winner but, again, these are young athletes so we are just building them in.

“And then there is Dajour Richards who won the 400, and we are also looking at the possibility of using him in a hurdles or something. We have some young athletes here who have a lot of potential.”

Other top athletes at the school include sprinters Kasey De Costa and Krystal Archibald, middle distance runners Raymond Browne and Dillan Williams.

Coach Williams also commented on his confidence in the school retaining the title at the Championships.

“It is not going to be an easy task because all the schools have good athletes, but it is not something that is impossible either. We just have to strategise and put our athletes in the best position to win in their events, and at the end of the day try to come out with the most gold medals. That is what we a going to try to do.

“We have our young athletes and we are going to be working with them, putting them in the event. We are confident that they could get the gold medal in and, at the end of the day, we will see how everything stacks up.”

Last year, Washy Wildcats retained the Inter-School Championships title capturing 23 gold medals in the process and a cash prize of EC$5 000.

In second place was Verchild’s High with 17 gold medals and they won a cash prize of EC$3 000, while third place went to Charles E. Mills Secondary with 14 gold medals and EC$2 000.

Basseterre High School placed fourth with 11 gold medals and EC$1 000, while Charlestown Secondary School was fifth with nine gold medals and EC$750, and Cayon High in sixth position with six gold medals and EC$500.

The monetary prize was sponsored by the St. Kitts-Nevis Amateur Athletics Association.
