Krystal Liburd, Nathaniel Huggins qualify for CARIFTA Games

By: Loshaun Dixon, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - ATHLETES from St. Kitts and Nevis have begun the process of gaining selection for the 2013 CARIFTA Games and other junior track and field competitions slated for later this year, as they participated in the 2013 National Youth and Junior Championships.

Hundreds of athletes turned out first at the Silver Jubilee Stadium then at the new Sandy Point Recreation Ground last weekend in an attempt to gain selection.

Though not fully completed as yet, the Silver Jubilee Stadium was used as the facility for the field events held on Friday (Mar. 9) before moving to Sandy Point on the following day.

The St. Kitts-Nevis Amateur Athletics Association (SKAAA) will soon announce the team that will be representing the Federation at the LIME CARIFTA Games, and two athletes have already qualified for the early April event.

The athletes are Krystal Liburd who attained a ‘A’ standard in the Females Under 17 Long Jump and Nathaniel Huggins who attained a ‘B’ standard in the Male Under 20 Long Jump.

The SKNAAA stated that the athletes’ performances must be achieved between April 1, 2012 and March 31, 2013

All performances must be achieved during competitions organised or sanctioned by the IAAF, its Area Associations and its National Federations. Thus, results achieved at club, university or school competitions must be certified by the SKNAAA and by the National Federation of the country in which the competition was organised.

This means most athletes will have a second opportunity to gain selection at the 2013 TDC Inter-School Championships set for March 22-24 at the Silver Jubilee Stadium.

Also, to be eligible for selection, athletes must participate in a minimum of two SKNAAA Development Meets.

The SKNAAA Executive, through its Selection Committee, reserves the right to determine the final team size and participants, who will then have to sign the SKNAAA's Team Code of Conduct and Team Contract.

Selected athletes must also participate in all national team training sessions, clinics and camps organised by the SKNAAA and its Head Coach for further preparation for this level of competition.
