Money, food, clothes, games stolen from Halfway Tree home

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - A family of three was more than taken aback when they returned to their home late Monday afternoon (Mar. 11) to discover that it had been broken into and several items stolen.

Dalton Jeffers, his girlfriend Dawne Blyden and their pre-teenaged daughter arrived at their Harry Phipps Development, Halfway Tree home at about 5:10 p.m. to find shards of glass scattered across the verandah.

The home was secured at about 8:15 that morning by Blyden as she was on her way to work.

“I thought something was smashed there but then I realised the house was broken into. We didn’t go inside but we immediately called the police,” Jeffers explained to this media house.

Blyden – who also spoke to this publication, said they did not enter the home until shortly after 7:00 p.m. when the police had arrived. However, upon entering, the sight was disconcerting.

The perpetrator(s) gained access to the home by breaking one of the glass panes of the window that sits on the right side of the front door.

She said the living room was ransacked, with documents - including paid bills - scattered across the floor. She further explained that Jeffers’ PS3 (a game) and in excess of $1 200 were removed from that room.

It appears – Blyden explained – that the thief(ves) rummaged through each room of the house as it was evident that items were stolen from the kitchen and one of the bedrooms.

The family’s pantry is situated in the kitchen and Blyden told this publication that sometime during the last week of February, food items and other consumables were purchased to sustain the family for the ensuring month.

She however pointed out that whoever broke into her home, stole most of the items that were stored in the pantry.

In the bedroom, they saw a suitcase - which contained some of Blyden’s clothes – removed from its position atop the clothes closet and in an open position as if it were rummaged through. Pieces of clothing were missing from it and several pieces of jewellery were stolen from the couple’s dressing table.

Blyden said among the jewellery stolen are a number of silver neck chains, hand chains, rings, earrings and a few gold rings, including her engagement ring.

Their daughter’s DS (Nintendo game) was also stolen.

“I was distraught when I realised what had happened. I didn’t sleep last night (Monday night). Dalton didn’t sleep well either. He kept getting up to check and see if everything was okay.”

Though she expressed disappointment in the length of time the police took in getting to the scene of the crime, Blyden said her family has already begun to pick up the pieces and is putting particular measures in place to guard against the likelihood of such occurrences.

SKNVibes made contact with the Sandy Point Police Station which confirmed that a report was placed and that they are making investigations into the incident.
