BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, March 15th 2013 (SKNIS) - RAM’s Supermarket on the Bay Road was recognized as the Consumer’s Supermarket of the Year 2013 on Thursday (March 14) during a ceremony held by the Department of Consumer Affairs.

The event was part of the week-long activities held for the local observance of World Consumer Rights Day. Investigations Officer Vincent Fough indicated that the assessment was made based on strict criteria which factored in the pricing of goods, most characteristics – which includes cleanliness, layout and ease of finding products. Anonymous random surveys of consumers throughout the island played an important role as well. Feedback was given on customer service, staff attitudes, most highly rated and also favourite supermarket.

Minister of Consumer Affairs Honourable Richard Skerritt explained that the criteria were developed “internally but transparently” and the surveyors carried out their work “professionally and anonymously.” He embraced the idea of this new award noting that it will build overtime and attract national prestige.

A number of partners were also recognized for the “exceptional support” provided to the Department of Consumer Affairs. These were Jaro Electronics, Lutron Liamigua, Electrofab, and Harowe Servo Control while Kajola Kristada was hailed for its unwavering and longstanding assistance. Prizes were also given to a number of persons who were successful in radio giveaways.

Minister Skerritt thanked the staff of the Department of Consumer Affairs for organizing the week of activities. He acknowledged that while in the past there have been some challenges, government remained committed to providing the necessary tools – including legislation – and other resources to boost effectiveness and efficiency.

Activities for Consumer Awareness Week ended on Friday (March 15) - internationally observed as World Consumer Rights Day - with a march through the streets of Basseterre.
